Yacht s tobacco banner under fire
The Federal Government is seeking legal advice on whether a yacht in the Sydney to
Hobart race with a cigarette brand name on its spinnaker has breached tobacco advertising
laws.
The Daily Telegraph reports a spokesman for Health Minister MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE yesterday
said he was concerned the Silk Cut logo on a Hong Kong yacht -- Assa Abloy -- had breached
the Tobacco Advertising Prohibition Act.
The spokesman says there had been no application for special exemption from the act.
The paper says an attempt was made to cover the Silk Cut name, but the logo was still
visible during the race.
In 1997, Pakistan's cricket team had to use white tape to cover the logo of Wills King,
a Pakistan tobacco company, on their bats during the Australian tour.
