Broadband speeds increase

Sri Lanka, April 9 -- The latest speed test results indicate that a majority of broadband service providers give internet users more than 60 per cent of the advertised speed, which is an improvement from last year's speed tests, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) said yesterday.

TRC Director General Anusha Palpita said the first speed test conducted last year indicated that the majority of service providers supplied only 20 per cent of the advertised rates.

"We will continue to conduct regular speed tests and discuss broadband speed rates. We plan to allocate a certain time period for service providers who do not meet up to their advertising standards, to reach the promised speed figures. However we have been able to observe a sharp improvement in broadband speeds during the past few months," he added.
